Lasik Average Cost Rising Steadily Since 2002

The average cost for LASIK surgery (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) has been rising since 2002. Prices for LASIK differ widely from one center to another because of the many forms of LASIK treatment and new technologies available such as wavefront guided LASIK where a computer controlled laser is used to cut the corneal flap.

In 2002, the cost of a typical LASIK procedure was between $1,550 - $1,600 per eye. In 2003, that rose to $1,700 and in 2004, it was about $1,800. These cost were typically for bladed microkeratomes and conventional excimer lasers. In recent years, prices seem to have stabilized. The average cost of LASIK in 2006 was about $1,950 which then rose slightly in 2007 to about $2,100.

It is still possible to get conventional LASIK procedures done for less than $1,000 per eye but patients need to take into account all the fine print. Most advertisements promoting low cost or discount LASIK procedures have terms and conditions that a patient must meet in order to get that low price. Some centers may not include the cost of consultation fees, follow-up care or other services in the advertised fee.Very often, the add on charges for the necessary post operative care can make the actual total cost for the LASIK operation equal or greater than that charged by an established or well known LASIK practise.
